When Akila Simon was planning her beloved Aunt Rhonda\u2019s 70th<\/sup> birthday party in September, the two women decided to give back in a special way. Upon learning The INN has a shower program where approximately 40 guests a week can shower at the soup kitchen, they asked partygoers in lieu of gifts, to donate towels and toiletries that they would collect on the day of the party and assemble into \u201cshower rolls\u201d to give out to INN guests. Each roll consists of travel-sized soap, shampoo, conditioner, a toothpaste and toothbrush, lotion and a razor. Rhonda\u2019s friends and family wore matching t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase, \u201cEmpowered to Serve,\u201d and completed exactly 70 rolls in honor of the birthday girl. A few days later, Aunt and Niece delivered the rolls, and an additional box of toiletries and gently used clothing to the donation center at the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen. INN staff and volunteers were thrilled to receive the donation, as they had been experiencing a low inventory of toiletries to provide for guests.<\/p>\n

When asked how it felt to give back, the two women had a lot to share.<\/p>\n

Akila Simon said, \u201c<\/em>We are in a moment where compassion and empathy feels more scarce than ever. I wanted to create a small moment of comfort and support for our neighbors experiencing homelessness\u00a0and displacement. By organizing this event, my hope was and still is to remind others that the smallest acts can make a\u00a0meaningful\u00a0difference. Life can change quickly for any of us.\u00a0 While we may not know the full story behind someone’s situation, we can always choose kindness without judgement. Simple gestures when multiplied, can create real and lasting change. Everyone deserves to feel seen and supported no matter their journey and I am grateful for the opportunity to play even a small part.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Rhonda Cudjoe County said, \u201c<\/em>Turning 70 felt like a moment to do more than celebrate with family-it felt like a moment to\u00a0give. We live in a time when some have so much, and many are struggling. I’ve felt a growing\u00a0desire to be of service in a more meaningful way. Being part of this effort, reminded me that small acts of kindness can be uplifting to\u00a0someone in\u00a0need. I’m thankful for the opportunity to give back and extend a bit of light to others along\u00a0the\u00a0way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
